Tax day is finally here and let’s hope no one has been staring at the stork, because a herring hangs by its own gills and it’s a bad idea to quit ’til you see the church and the steeple.
Well, maybe it sounds better in Dutch. The stork, the herring and the church steeple are all images from Dutch proverbs and one hundred of them appear in Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s ‘Netherlandish Proverbs,’ shown below. Some are common to many languages (‘chalk it up’), but some need to be rephrased for us, as they are here, along with thumbnails showing their location in the painting. Have fun.
