Three significant December birthdays that got past us:

Wassily Kandinsky. December 4, 1866, to December 13, 1944. The first real abstract painter, way ahead of his time. Below, Composition VII, 1913.

Much more about him here.

Stuart Davis, December 7, 1892 to June 24, 1964. Interestingly, both Kandinsky and Davis were fascinated by the intersection of painting and music. Below, Hot Still-scape for six colors, 7th Avenue style, 1940.

More about him here.

And,  December 8, 1886 to November 24, 1957, Diego Rivera. Husband of Frida Kahlo, muralist, activist. More about him here.  Below, one of twenty-seven fresco panels painted in a courtyard for the Detroit Institute of Art between 1932 and 1933. Entitled Detroit Industry.

  2. “Detroit Industry” is amazing – I feel like I should somehow jump into the painting and give them a helping hand or something!
