Missed a great birthday yesterday – Yo Yo Ma celebrated his 56th. There are a lot of excellent videos of him in performance on YouTube – the orthographic conjunction of Ma and Emanuel Ax is always nice – but this, of Bach’s Sarabande, is just outstanding.

He mentions, in passing, the music of the shakuhachi, a traditional wooden flute featured in 16th century Japanese court music. Court music, aka gagaku, has a lot in common with Bach, so after Ma comes a good example:
