Many happy returns to Charlie Rose, who celebrates his 70th today, and also to Diane Keaton, who has hit retirement age, but isn’t slowing down much.

And belated best wishes to mezzo Grace Bumbry, who turned 75 yesterday.  When Grace was a girl in St. Louis she entered – and won – a radio singing competition. First prize included a scholarship to a local conservatory, but the school was segregated and refused to accept her – and that probably explains why Grace became an expatriate.  Most of her many professional successes have been abroad.  She currently lives in Salzburg, Austria.

  1. Perfect! Really enjoyed that Habanero. Can’t believe that Austria is less bigoted than USA!

  2. It was actually Grace Bumbry’s 75th (not 74th) birthday on January 4th, 2012. Happy birthday! The legendary Ms Bumbry will appear in Theatre du Chatelet, Paris, on March 6th, and in Berlin, Deutsche Oper (in Bernstein’s “Candide”) on March 15th.
