Many happy returns to Chita Rivera, who turns 78 today.

In 2002, she became the first Hispanic woman to receive a Kennedy Center honors award and last August she received the Presidential Medal of Honor. Born in Washington DC, she got her first Broadway job in 1952 and has been working ever since, except for many months in the 80’s, when she was recovering from a car accident that left her with a broken leg – broken in 12 places. She has been nominated for 8 Tony awards and has won two. Here are clips from her one-woman show, ‘The Dancer’s Life’:

  1. Chita is a wonder. I enjoyed the clip of her singing “All That Jazz,” – albeit with poor video quality. Worth a listen!
